Captain of Captains – Mr Chris Bursey 2026
Captain of Cobble Hall Club 20xx
There can be few places in the country that can rival the Leeds area for quantity, quality, and diversity of golf courses.
Golfers in this region can (and do) count themselves lucky to be able to play so many excellent courses on their own doorstep.
The SOCIETY of LEEDS GOLF CAPTAINS, Not the first society, (London and Liverpool predated Leeds,) was formed in May 1952.
The membership was restricted to Captains and past Captains of associated clubs within six miles of the GPO building in Leeds city centre. The society continued to grow from the original 8 clubs to a maximum of 23. Over time the number of member clubs fell to as low as 17, However, we are now back up to 21 member clubs and enjoying substantial numbers of playing members.
With the sad passing of Peter Alliss, our Patron of some 20 years, it was decided to replace the position of Patron with that of Society President. The President will, in the future be the immediate past Captain of Captains, who will hold office for 1 year. Our first President was therefore Mr. Ken Lane of the Low Laithes Golf Club, our 2020/2021 Captain.
I feel very honoured to be appointed to the position of Captain of the Society of Leeds Golf Captains for 2026.
I started my golfing career at Leeds Golf Club – Cobble Hall – in 1988. Not having played golf before then, my next door neighbour persuaded me to buy his father’s old clubs for a tenner, and subsequently to put my name on the waiting list!
As a member at Cobble Hall I have fulfilled various roles over the years including competition and handicap secretary, Director, Captain and President.
As Captain of the Society I will do my best to encourage and support the friendships and traditions built up over the years, and hopefully to win a few matches on the way.I feel very honoured to be appointed to the position of Captain of the Society of Leeds Golf Captains for 2026.
